Voice - Body - Imagination - Movement - Music
Exploring the links between voice, body and imagination lies at the core of all my voice teaching. Gaining confidence and re-learning how to play and explore with the freedom of a child, yet with the experience and depth of understanding of an adult, is fundamental to the work. Through exploring sensation, movement impulse, emotion, memory and imagination, a deeper understanding of what it means to give voice is reached, and innate musicality is unearthed.
As a one-time sociologist, I'm interested in the clear parallels between the group work that I do in the field of voice, and the Irish traditions of keening (traditional 'keen' expression of grief through song), as well as other indigenous vocal practices. The involuntary or spontaneous expressions of feeling through impromptu music when groups come together to explore movement and sound. For me, the kind of keen sense of 'community listening', the mutual harmonising that occurs, following the rise and fall, the start and ending of musical cadences and sequences, without premeditation or rehearsal , re-defines (divines?) 'Holy Communion' in a way, in a society where conventional Religious practices have perhaps been somewhat responsible for killing off of the potential for a more spontaneous empowered kind of communal expression.
I am open to arranging once-off or ongoing workshops exploring movement, voice and music, for all ages, experiences, ability and mobility levels, facilitating group vocal explorations using the piano as an extension of my voice. Inter-generational participation is actively encouraged. Please enquire if you have a group that is interested, and keep an eye on my 'workshops' page for details of any pre-arranged sessions.
